Neurodiversity in Recovery
Neurodiversity in Recovery is an open, LGBTQIA+ affirming meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous that welcomes and embraces neurodivergent individuals. Neurodivergence refers to ways of thinking and being that diverge from what is considered normal or “neurotypical.” This can include autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and OCD, but it is not limited to those.
Being neurodivergent plays an integral role in our stories - both in active addiction and in seeking recovery. We see the need for a space that centers these experiences. For us, these are not “outside issues.” Where many of us lived in isolation before, we can now create the fellowship we crave, finding healing and support among others like us.
Our meeting is held in the medium room with soft lighting (no fluorescent lights!!), and accommodating acoustics. We often keep a collection of fidget toys to share with participants who want to stim during the meeting.
In accordance with the 6th tradition of Alcoholics Anonymous, Neurodiversity in Recovery is not affiliated with Austin Galano Club. Since this is an open meeting, those not specifically addicted to alcohol are welcome as well.
