More Than a Meeting: What It Means to Be a Member

When we first walk into the Austin Galano Club, most of us are just looking for one thing: a safe place to land. We come for a meeting, a chair in the back, maybe a cup of coffee we’re not sure we’ll finish. It’s easy to miss that simply by showing up, we’ve stepped into something much bigger than a schedule of meetings or a building with comfortable chairs and good coffee.

At AGC, everyone who attends a meeting is part of this community. Some of us later choose to become Sustaining Members, but the heart of membership starts long before that—on the day we decide not to do recovery alone.

A Home for LGBTQIA+ Recovery

For many in the LGBTQIA+ community and our allies, “mainstream” spaces haven’t always felt safe or affirming. Austin Galano Club offers something simple and radical: a space where our identities and our recovery can coexist in the same room. The club exists for LGBTQIA+ folks, allies, and everyone who needs a place where they don’t have to edit who they are to get honest about where they are.

Membership here isn’t about joining the “right” group; it’s about knowing there is a place for you at the table, wherever you are in your recovery journey. Week after week, people gather at AGC for meetings, fellowship, step work, and service—each person adding to an atmosphere of safety, dignity, and hope.

From Meeting Attendee to Sustaining Member

Over time, something subtle shifts. We come in to attend meetings, grateful the lights are on and the doors are unlocked. At some point, we realize this place didn’t just appear—it exists because people before us chose to support it.

Becoming a Sustaining Member is one way to join that legacy. With a recurring monthly or annual contribution, as low as $10 a month, Sustaining Members help provide a safe, affordable home for current and future generations in LGBTQIA+ recovery. Membership levels are flexible, with options that fit different budgets. The exact dollar amount matters less than the intention behind it: “This place matters, and I want it to be here for someone else tomorrow.”

Why Membership Matters

In recovery, we talk about being “self‑supporting.” The same spirit guides the Austin Galano Club. Membership support helps cover operating expenses so the burden doesn’t fall entirely on individual groups having to rent space at market prices. Tenant groups remain self‑supporting, while Sustaining Members help keep the Doors Open, the Space Clean and Safe, Meeting Rents Low, and Community & Events happening.

Because the club is supported by its own community, it can stay focused on its mission: to be a safe, welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ recovery. Every recurring membership—from the smallest monthly gift to the largest annual pledge—helps protect that mission. It’s a way of saying, “I was given a place to heal; I’m willing to help make sure it’s here for the next person.”

Keeping What We Help Build

There’s a familiar saying in recovery: “we keep what we have by giving it away.” At Austin Galano Club, becoming a member is one way we live that out in a concrete, tangible way. Some of us give time—volunteering at the coffee bar, chairing meetings, serving on committees. Others give money through Sustaining Membership. Some of us give both.

Everyone is invited to become a Sustaining Member. The sign‑up is simple and can be completed online in just a few minutes at Become A Member | Austin Galano Club , but the impact of that choice can last far longer. Your membership helps ensure that when someone in crisis goes looking for LGBTQIA+ recovery in Austin, they’ll find what you found at AGC: a chair, a meeting, and a community ready to welcome them home.
