Fellowship, a Friendliness, and an Understanding: Finding Our Lifeboat at Austin Galano Club

"We are people who normally would not mix." These iconic words from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous describe a profound truth about recovery that we see in action every day at the Austin Galano Club. Using the analogy of a great ocean liner—much like the Titanic—the authors of the Big Book illustrate how individuals from vastly different backgrounds suddenly find themselves in the same freezing water, after rescue from shipwreck. Whether we once sat at the "Captain’s table" or struggled in "steerage," the crisis of addiction levels the playing field. In that moment of "common peril," the social, economic, and identity-based walls that usually divide us crumble away, replaced by a common bond that only survivors can truly understand.

For many in the LGBTQIA+ community, the shipwreck of addiction can feel especially isolating. That is why the sense of "we" is so vital to our mission here at AGC. We aren’t just a building; we are the rescue vessel where “camaraderie, joyousness, and democracy pervade.” Just as the survivors of a shipwreck find a unique bond regardless of where they started their journey, AGC serves as a safe, comfortable place where our diverse community—lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, allies, and beyond—can gather on equal ground. We provide the facility and the operational support so that every 12-Step group has a place to launch their own lifeboat.

However, the metaphor isn’t just about the disaster; it’s about the moment of rescue. The Big Book warns that right now, "alcoholics are dying helplessly like people in a sinking ship." This imagery shifts our focus from the tragedy to the urgent, personal responsibility of rowing back toward the wreckage. It transforms our shared struggle into a call for action—one that requires someone already in the boat to reach back into the dark water. At AGC, we see this happen in every meeting and social gathering: the hand of experience reaching out to the newcomer who is still treading water.

In the chaos of a sinking ship, you don't care about the status or the past of the person reaching for you; you only care that they are there. That outstretched hand represents the bridge between certain disaster and a new life. Today, we are grateful not just for the rescue, but for the courage of those who choose to row back for others. Whether you are looking for your rescue boat or you’re ready to be the hand that reaches back, the Austin Galano Club is here to make sure no one has to face the storm alone.

Lambda Live and Let Live on Wednesday, April 15th at 8:00 PM will commemorate the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, reflecting on the historical tragedy that gave us one AA’s most enduring metaphors for fellowship and survival.
