Dearest Austin Galano Club Community,
The Board of Directors has come to the decision to temporarily close the club in adherence with the City of Austin’s prohibition of the gathering of groups of 10 or more people. This ordinance is part of a larger effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.
AGC will remain closed until the city lifts the ban, which has been tentatively scheduled for May 1, 2020.
We did not take this decision lightly and gave great consideration to the effects this will have on all of you. For the good of the club and the larger community, and with this new mandate by the city, we were given no other choice for the safety and well-being of everyone.
During this temporary closure, we encourage our members to take advantage of virtual meetings. Meeting “room” links for all 23 groups that meet at the club have been created. They can be accessed from any mobile phone or computer, as long as you have web access. Each group is responsible for managing this platform and has the autonomy to conduct meetings as they see fit, including whether or not to maintain their regular schedule. Groups who already make use of their individual group link on the AGC website are encouraged to continue to do so.
The meeting links for each group and instructions are on our Virtual Meetings page of this website. For more information or questions about these links, contact firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
To all of our AA groups, please be sure to contact the Hill Country Intergroup
to update your meeting status. Many of you have already posted online meetings outside of AGC on our private Facebook group page. Thank you so much! For example, online AA meetings are regularly held via the worldwide AA Online Intergroup. In The Rooms
is another online resource for AA, NA, and other 12-Step programs. There are also links on our page to other meetings in Austin. Let’s continue to pool our resources in the weeks ahead! Some of you have already begun to organize meetings outdoors and private meetings in your homes. If there’s one thing to be said for individuals in recovery, it is that we are creative, resourceful, and resilient! If you want to be a member of the private Facebook group, email firstname.lastname@example.org
The Board has also decided to suspend groups’ rent effective March 18, 2020 until the club reopens. Because some of the club’s operating costs continue during our closure, AGC is accepting donations in the interim. Likewise, regarding the 7th tradition, we ask each of you to consider donating to the club as well as your individual groups. Donations can be made here: Galano Club & 12-Step Group Donations.
The Board will continue to monitor CDC
and Austin Public Health
websites for additional guidance. Updates or changes to AGC’s status will be communicated to the community via social media, the front gates, and your group representatives. We also encourage all community members to follow hygiene and health guidance provided by the CDC, City of Austin, and health experts in your daily lives.
This time of uncertainty and fear, as well as isolation and social distancing, can be difficult for the average person, but particularly for the recovering person. So many of you rely on the club and fellowship; they are an integral part of your day-to-day life over the past weeks, months, and years. You may be experiencing increased anxiety and fear due to the closure and separation from others. Please be sure to check in on one another. Facetime, create group texts, make calls, and stay connected! Reach out to your sponsor. And, above all else, stay clean and sober! We will miss you! Take good care and be in touch.
Ever sincerely, your humble trusted servants in recovery, unity, and service,
