Welcome to the Newly Elected AGC Board Directors!

On January 20, 2019, four new directors were elected to the Austin Galano Club (AGC) Board of Directors by dues-paying AGC members in attendance at the Annual AGC Member Meeting. The new directors are Clara R., Jamal W., James Y., and Lauren O. They join returning directors Angel L., Erik B., Jamie S., Mara W., Victor M., and Wayne B.

We recently asked Clara, Jamal, James, and Lauren a few questions about where they’re from, preferred pronouns, why this position of leadership in the AGC community is important to them, and what they hope to accomplish during their three year tenure. Here are their responses!

Clara (she/her/hers) is from Medellin, Colombia. In Clara’s words, “being AGC Director means to be the group conscience of the different groups that gather at Galano, as well as putting time and effort to [assist] the general services [of] the Galano Club such as coffee bar service, good communication among different groups, and financial responsibility related to house maintenance and bills.” Clara also hopes to help with a newly proposed Education and Outreach subcommittee by contributing to efforts to reach “more people outside [of Galano] that are still suffering”. She also wants to help “make bonds and stronger relationships with the members of the Galano Club” and make AGC “a place that does not depend on [a few people] to keep its doors open.”

Jamal (he/him/his) is from Chicago, Illinois.  For Jamal, being an AGC director “means honing both my humility and my leadership while being of service. It means Step 12. I hope to bring an open mind and business skillset. And, I hope to achieve fellowship.”

James (he/him/his) is from Richmond, Virginia. James stated he is “very excited to be a new member of the Galano Club Board. I came to Austin a little over 3 years ago when I needed to get sober and I have had a homegroup at the Galano Club that entire time. As a Board Member I hope that I will be able to carry on the Club’s mission to provide a safe place to recover in the Austin community. My aim here is to bring my passion for recovery into the betterment of the Club and I look forward to serving each group and all of the members who have found a home here just as I did.”

Lauren (she/her/hers) is from Chicago, Illinois. Lauren explained that the “Galano Club has been a huge part of my recovery since moving to Austin in 2016. I look forward serving as an AGC Director as a way to give back to the club and our community. I hope to apply some of my professional skills in nonprofit management to help make the club the best it can be.”

Undoubtedly, each of these newly elected directors bring enthusiasm, diverse areas of expertise, and a commitment to serve the ever-expanding and ever-evolving AGC community. We are excited to see the ways in which they contribute to the club’s operation and mission!

And, on behalf of the current AGC Board of Directors, we’d like to thank our outgoing directors—Quentin M. and Tom S.—for their dedication and diligence over the past three years. We so appreciate all that you did to serve the AGC community!
